Professor Dr Tengku Ain Fathlun Tengku Kamalden is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, and a vitreoretinal surgeon at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). She obtained her DPhil from the University of Oxford and completed fellowship training in Medical and Surgical Retina at the National University Hospital Singapore. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and was a Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, USA.
Her clinical and research interests include retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, inherited retinal diseases (IRD), ocular biomarkers, ocular trauma, and translational ophthalmic research. Her research has focused on the evaluation of blood- and tear-based biomarkers for retinal diseases and the development of innovations to support clinical care and medical education.
She is involved in collaborative efforts to improve the diagnosis and management of inherited retinal diseases in Malaysia, including initiatives related to genetic testing, patient referral pathways, and the establishment of a national IRD registry.
In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, she contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical research, and national ophthalmology initiatives.
