Dr. Shamala Retnasabapathy is an Ophthalmologist with sub-speciality in Cornea and External Eye Diseases. She has over 29 years of experience in the field, including 25 years as a subspecialist in Cornea and External Eye Diseases. She completed her fellowship at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia, in 2001.
Throughout her career, Dr. Shamala has played a pivotal role in advancing corneal and external eye disease services in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Notably, she led the establishment of the Corneal and External Eye Disease Services and the Eye Bank at Hospital Sungai Buloh, transforming it into a leading tertiary center for training and clinical services. An active contributor to the field, Dr. Shamala has presented extensively at numerous local and national Ophthalmology conferences, focusing on corneal and external eye diseases.In recognition of her contributions, she was honored with the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology Distinguished Service Award in 2019.
Since 2025, Dr. Shamala is a faculty member at Taylor’s University School of Medicine, where she is dedicated to training the next generation of medical professionals and engaging in impactful research activities.
